We bought these simple, minimalist wooden blocks when Kate was around 8 months old and was showing interest in stacking and building! I loved the simplicity of them. Now that Max is playing with them, I wanted to give them a little makeover! I love how they came out and think this would be the PERFECT, thoughtful gift for a mom to be!
Essentially, you could easily make these wooden blocks with the right tools but they’re pretty affordable as a set on Amazon as well. They’re super raw and they stack perfectly.

I decided to use my leftover Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint for this project for several reasons. The biggest reason is that it’s an all natural paint so I don’t have to worry about the kids putting the blocks in their mouths. I also sealed it with my Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil. Another all natural, kid safe product! I also love that the hemp oil brought out the different tones in the natural wood!

First, I mixed my paint. I did about a table spoon of paint and a table spoon of water. I mixed it and let it sit while I taped off the shapes on my blocks. Since the wood was unfinished, I knew that the paint would stick well so I didn’t have to prep my surface at all.
I used typical painters tape to tape off some geometric shapes on the blocks. They were honestly, really random. I just knew I didn’t want to have to turn them over. So I made sure one each one, there was at least one side with no paint!
A little tip: Use a damp paper towel to rub the edges of the tape down. It gives you a cleaner line!
I then painted on my first coat. Let that dry, and hit it with a second coat. The milk paint dries really quickly so this didn’t take long at all.
After they dried, I painted on the hemp oil and then rubbed it off with an old cloth.
The oil takes 24 hours to completely dry, so we let them sit and were able to play with them the next day! I’m sure my kids don’t really care if they’re painted or not, but I love that it matches out living room!
I think this would be a fantastic gift for a mom to be. If you know the gender or colors in the nursery, you could even paint them to match! I kind of want to make another set in pastels. I think it would be so cute! You could stencil on the kids names. Honestly, the possibilities are endless!
