If you’ve been reading and watching me for a while now, then you’ll know that Kassy On Design Rule #1 is ‘CREATE FUNCTIONAL STORAGE’. The idea that any storage is good storage is simply not true. As a home owner, I strive to create storage that works for us. Customized for my family and our needs. Not everyone’s storage needs are the same. Which is why I absolutely had to re-think Max’s Closet space. So here is a brief overview of my functional toddler closet makeover.

First, let’s see the before…
I’m aware that this is a terrible photo, but it will have to do. All there was in the space was a wire shelf and single long hanging rod. Max’s clothes are currently like 2′ long max and there is no where to put shoes or folded clothes. Why not put a dresser in his room? Well, the kid’s rooms are really small and I wanted to maximize space and allow this closet space to work overtime for me instead of sitting unused.
My first step is to take inventory of what we need to store. Max had a dresser that I kept the majority of this clothes in. We needed smart shoe storage and some baskets for knick knacks. My goal is always to keep as much of the clutter hidden as possible. I like the ease of a shallow dresser drawers. Easy to keep organized and nothing gets lost. So, I grabbed this one from Wayfair as a starting point.
My second rule of design is ‘ALWAYS TAKE A RISK’ and this rusty red cabana stripe wallpaper from Lick Paint is my risk in Max’s room. Did it pay off? YES! Or at least I think so. It’s the perfect fun back drop for what could be a pretty boring space. I painted the built ins a custom color that I created called ‘Maxed & Relaxed’. You can click here to see how I created a custom color and to get the formula for this colors.
From there, I added this shelf unit from Closet Maid on top of the dresser. I had to cut it down just a bit so that it would fit. I then anchored those two things to the wall and added shelves on either side. There are two hanging racks on the right side and a basket for dirty clothes underneath. The last piece and the star of the show is this Lazy Shoesan. It’s a tension rod with spinning racks for shoes. It works for toddler shoes and adult shoes. It has up to 8 racks that each hold 5 pair but I old put half of the racks on it since Max has very few shoes!
Check out the end result! I tried my best to link everything but as always, feel free to reach out with any questions.
