Farmhouse Chic

The shabby chic movement is taking the interior design world by storm. Personally, I’m a fan of a little more chic and a little less shabby  (Even though I grew up an a log cabin… YES! A real one). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a southern girl at heart and a little vintage antique make my eyes light up, but I’d rather my furniture NOT look like its been through a wood chipper and then repainted. A nice bit of wear is lovely, it says, “Hi, I’m a chair that has seen the fanny’s of many important people.” But too much looks obviously faux-distressed. and the only faux I’m into is fur, eyelashes, and hair extensions. (I’ll do a blog post on how to correctly antique furniture)

My rendition of a shabby chic is called FARMHOUSE CHIC! Its more chic, but still has that southern, airy charm. Check out my dining room ideas below:

Dining Room

A Dining room doesn’t require many furniture pieces, so you have to choose the ones you need very carefully. A dining table is perhaps one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. When you have people over to entertain, you’ll likely be sitting at your dinner table for a good portion of the time. This gorgeous piece from World Market (WM is so underrated!) is just the right amount of shabby with its unfinished wood look (and super affordable too).

Every room needs a little color. Here we’re bringing in that touch of pale aqua in our dining chairs. Just imagine how FAB that table will look with 6 of those puppies around it. This chair also comes in an identical version with arms if you’re super tradition and like those armchairs for the table heads.

A nontraditional light fixture is a must if you want to pull off the farmhouse look. Here I used a cool bronze/gold chandelier. A crystal chandelier would add a little femininity to this space if thats the look you’re going for. World Market has some great options, as per usual!

I also included this great wooden shelf from Crate&Barrel. Its pretty pricey, but check out this super great tutorial on how to make it yourself from Seventh House on the Left! I love a good DIY… or in my case “DIY… then when that fails, call your super handy dad or your learning-to-be-handy fiancee.”

A pretty antiqued sideboard for all of your storage, some sheer linen curtains to allow natural light to shine through, and a simple pitcher as a vase and TADA… FARMHOUSE SUPA CHIC!
